Ideas for working on comprehension
Ideas for working on comprehension
- Picture Walk- Look at each page in the book with your child talking about the pictures. This allows them to learn what the story will be about.
- Talk to your child about what you are reading. Start with simple questions W questions. Then go on to “Can you make a connection to this part of the story?” or “What is the importance of _____?”
3. Encourage re-reading of a story to build understanding. Often a reader needs to re-read a story are few times, as the first time they are focusing on decoding the words. Reading the book then listening to an audiobook version of the book (or vice-versa) will increase your child's understanding of the story. On YouTube enter a novel name and the word audiobook. Here is a favorite of my students!
4. Ask your child questions about the t.v. show they are watching or the video game they are playing to encourage them to think about the key details of stories presented in different ways. Retelling the story is a key skill!
